Christmas re-focus

I am the type of person who tries to be prepared for holidays weeks in advance, but this year has turned out to be the exception in my usually organized life.  It seems that Christmas has “caught me by surprise.”  My friends and family would be shocked to come over and see that the only decorations up are outside of my home.  The inside is filled with unpacked boxes of ornaments, lights, snowflakes, and homemade ornaments my children have made over their school careers.  Last night I became frustrated over the lack of holiday cheer in my home decorations and thought that Christmas would not be as fun for me this year.  All of  that changed later that evening when we received the news that a dear friend in Seattle passed away after a long and difficult battle with cancer.

In his final moments he was surrounded by his family. Did it matter if there wasn’t a tree decorated yet?  Did it matter that the gifts haven’t been wrapped, cards haven’t been sent or that gingerbread houses haven’t been made?  It reminded me of the most important thing we need to focus on…each other.

So as I awoke this morning, thankful that I could live another day, I made up my mind that I will not worry about “the list” but I will make the most of spending time with the ones I love during this season.  I will make that gingerbread house with the kids and have fun.  Who knows, maybe it will become a village.

Enjoy the time you have with your loved ones.  Make this the season they will never forget.

Merry  Christmas!

  1. It seems that you’ve captured the true essence of this holiday season in your post today. All of the other stuff are extras… things you can live with or without. Family, friends, and love are necessities.

    Sorry for your loss.

Treasure the moments with your family today and on Christmas.
